As we continue to celebrate Makhadzi’s big win at the BET Awards 2024 for Viewer’s Choice: Best New International Act, she recently revealed the lengths she had to go to to be able to attend and receive her award in person.
Makhadzi’s Financial Crisis
During an interview with Podcast and Chill hosts, MacG and Sol, the first-time BET Award winner from Limpopo revealed that she is going through financial struggles due to her SARS debt.
As a result, Makhadzi said she had to borrow money from umashonisa (loan shark) to travel to Los Angeles, California for the awards.

She explained that all the money she has been making over the past months has been settling her tax debt owed to the South African Revenue Service (SARS) leaving her with almost nothing.
In December of 2023, it was reported that she owed SARS a total bill of R6.6 million (approx. $357,000) for tax.

Makhadzi At The BET Awards 2024
Regardless of her financial crisis, Makhadzi did arrive in the US and was a superstar as always and if it wasn’t for her revealing her situation no one would have guessed.
She also mentioned that she wasn’t aware of what BET is all about and didn’t know many of the celebrities present at the awards.
However, her team guided her throughout and even got her to shoot pictures with many global stars who were present for PR purposes.
