It’s always a beautiful moment watching a South African film with familiar faces and set locations on giant global platforms such as Netflix. It’s even more beautiful when those familiar faces, seasoned and rising, give a world-class performance which is the case with Netflix’s Soon Comes Night!

Series Overview
The Ochre Moving Pictures production follows the story of a former freedom fighter who orchestrates a series of heists in defiance of the law while trying to evade corrupt authorities and a cop with a tragic past. Starring Kwenzo Ngcobo as Alex Shabane, Albert Pretorius as Sakkie Oosthuizen, and Didintle Khunou as Thato Sekoati, the TV drama was perfectly cast by seasoned actress, Terry Pheto.

The Ultimate Review
Just to deal with the big elephant in the room and so you can easily grasp my review, please note that I rate this season at 8 out of 10, and below are all my reasons that informed this rating.
As abovementioned, the casting was perfect, a perfect balance of seasoned and rising stars. Some of the actors that we know for playing a certain type of role in other films they have previously worked on were taken out of their comfort zone on Soon Comes Night showcasing their variety in acting beyond their typecast.

The typical “seeking justice” storyline we are already familiar with was touched up a little bit which are effort I greatly appreciated.
South Africa has 11 official languages and although not all languages were used there was a variety in terms of language from English, and Afrikaans to Zulu, Xhosa, Tswana, and maybe a few more that I may have missed.

As much as I enjoyed watching the series, there are some reasons why I give it an 8 out of 10. The series didn’t have enough thrill or plot twist moments for my liking. Some scenes were predictable and there were times I felt like some scenes or moments were rushed for example we didn’t get to see properly the relationship between Thato Sekoati (pleayed by Didintle Khunou) and her father.
Thato Sekoati joining the police was a result of the brutal murder of her father which she got to see through the window of their home. It would have been amazing to see her life more after this tragic loss leading to her finally joining the police force.

As for the storyline of the former comrades, it would have been amazing to see them fight together during the liberation times and how some transitioned to working for the government while some became community heroes and heist kings.
