In 2021 Ukhozi FM took us into 2022 with a song of the year that didn’t chart at all by the unknown DJ Hlo and in 2023 into 2024 although the artist and song are known, the song didn’t deserve it which is why Mzansi is mad.

Ukhozi FM Song of the Year 2023

As they do annually, Ukhozi FM, the biggest radio station in South Africa, opens up public voting for the song of the year, and whoever gets the most votes regardless of whether they are known or not gets the song of the year.

This system has been criticized year after year but the radio station seems to be ignoring the public’s outroar and proceeded to do the same thing in 2023 where “iPlan” was an obvious winner for song of the year but based on their biased voting system Khuzani took it with his song “Umjolo Lowo.”

New Year Event 2023/24

Ukhozi hosted it’s annual New Year’s Eve event in KZN where thousands of people came in numbers! As a standard throughout the world, on midnight of each new year the song played at that time is the song of the year.

Most events, radio stations, and TV channels stepped into the New Year 2024 with “iPlan” by Dlala Thukzin, Sykes, and Zaba, which deserved this title. If not “iPlan” then “Mnike” was the second-best contender for song of the year.

The crowd booed and made comments that showed they were not happy with Khuzani’s “Umjolo Lowo” being song of the year especially after the outcries when DJ Hlo took song of the year.

“iPlan” by Thukzin

The hottest song in the streets, to this day, “iPlan” by Thukzin is an obvious winner for song of the year and that was the case in most events throughout South Africa. However, on Ukhozi FM it was number 3 in the top 10 list for song of the year which sparked an uproar at their event and on social media when they played it before midnight. Below are a few posts about this on social media.
