Johannesburg turned up the volume on Saturday, 25 April 2026, as Ultra South Africa kicked off its landmark 11th edition at the Expo Centre in Nasrec.
For the first time ever, Joburg hosted the opening night of Africa’s biggest electronic music festival, setting the tone for an unforgettable weekend before the party moved to Cape Town the following day.
As official media partners, 9ice Entertainment was right in the heart of the action — capturing every pyro blast, stage takeover, and crowd moment for our aftermovie, photo galleries, and on-the-ground coverage. If you missed it (or want to relive it), this is your front-row seat.
Four Stages, One Massive Vibe
Ultra Johannesburg delivered four world-class stages that kept the energy flowing from early afternoon until the 2 a.m. curfew:
- Main Stage – The beating heart of the festival
- RESISTANCE – Underground house and techno heaven
- The Groove Room – Amapiano and Afrobeats takeover
- Confessions Stage ZA – Fresh forward-thinking sounds
The production was next-level. Massive LED walls, jaw-dropping visuals, and pyro that lit up the Nasrec sky made it clear: Ultra SA 2026 raised the bar once again.
Main Stage Magic: Headliners & Surprise Moments
The Main Stage lineup was stacked with global superstars and local legends:
- Afrojack b2b R3HAB opened the night with high-octane bangers that had the entire venue bouncing.
- Axwell delivered a perfect mix of progressive house nostalgia and fresh energy.
- DJ Snake brought pure chaos — surprising everyone by bringing out Bantu for their new track Company. The crowd went feral.
- John Summit closed the night in true headline style, riding the wave of his hotly anticipated CTRL album release with non-stop tech-house fire.
But the biggest moment of the night? Afrojack jumping on stage for a surprise back-to-back set with Shimza.
Fresh off their Coachella collaboration, the two icons fused global EDM with Afro-house in a cultural moment that perfectly captured what Ultra South Africa is all about.

RESISTANCE & The Groove Room Delivered Heat
On the RESISTANCE Stage, New York house pioneer Dennis Ferrer and South African powerhouse Shimza held it down with deep, melodic, and Afro-infused techno sets.
Support from Major League DJz, Caiiro b3b Da Capo b3b Enoo Napa, Kitty Amor, Apashe, and more kept the underground faithful locked in all night.
Over at The Groove Room, Amapiano ruled supreme. Scorpion Kings, DBN Gogo, Sun-El Musician, Liquideep, Zee Nxumalo, Oscar Mbo, and Que DJ x DJ Lag turned the space into a non-stop Amapiano and Afrobeats celebration that had dancers moving till the very last second.
The brand-new Confessions Stage ZA brought something different — forward-thinking house and experimental sounds from Dean Fuel, CINIMIN, Chunda Munki, and more.
The Crowd, The Energy, The Unity
From the moment gates opened, the Expo Centre was packed. Flags from across the continent waved high, friends linked up from different cities, and the dancefloor became one massive, smiling, sweating family.
This is what Ultra does best — turning Johannesburg into the beating heart of global electronic music for one unforgettable night.
